Joseph Murphy is a ceramicist whose practice reimagines the relationship between form and surface. Working primarily with thrown clay, Murphy applies intricate surface techniques that introduce an unexpected element of softness to rigid vessels, infusing each piece with a lively, tactile energy. Driven by the belief that texture surrounds us in everyday life, Murphy seeks to heighten our perception of it—inviting viewers to experience clay not just as a visual medium, but as an inviting, sensory dialogue.
Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Murphy moved to the United States at a young age and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
